MODULARIZATION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY

CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND MODULARIZATION

Circular economy is an alternative to the traditional linear economy. The main idea is to minimize waste and move away from a culture in which we use and discard, instead maximizing the use of resources by using them for as long as possible and recycling or reusing them when they no longer serve a purpose.

THE CONNECTION

Modularization enables companies to reduce inventory, minimize waste, and simplify the value chain, which reduces costs. In a modular product, individual modules can be replaced, repaired, and reused, reducing resource consumption, and extending the product’s lifespan. Because modularization involves working with a limited number of module variants, each serving a specific purpose and capable of being combined in various ways, it is possible to scale production of individual modules as needed. This reduces raw materials, waste, energy usage, and environmental impact. In this way, modularization supports a circular economy.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Companies can reduce their costs with circular economy because resources are used more efficiently and the need for raw materials in product materials is reduced. Since a principle of the circular economy is to reuse materials to the greatest extent possible, companies can create new revenue streams and opportunities for innovation, such as selling the materials or using them in new products. Implementing a circular economy in business can also have favorable effects on image and reputation because sustainability has increasingly become a priority for consumers. Therefore, circular economy also has the potential to attract new customer groups.

THE SEVEN R’S OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY

RETHINK

Reconsider design and business models to achieve better resource efficiency and replace the ‘take-make-dispose’ approach with a focus on reusability, recycling, and repair from the design phase.

REDESIGN

Design products to be durable, recyclable, and easy to repair.

REDUCE

Reduce your company’s resource needs by cutting down on materials, energy, and water in the production process, as well as minimizing waste production such as over-packaging.

REUSE

Utilize products, components, and materials multiple times and/or for new purposes, either in their original or processed form.

REPAIR

Maintain and repair damaged or defective products instead of replacing them with new ones.

REFURBISH

Upgrade and update products instead of discarding them, extending their lifespan.

RECYCLE

Transform materials from waste streams into new materials or products.

REASONS TO COMBINE MODULARIZATION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Incorporating circular economy into your modular strategy can provide competitive advantages for your company. Here are three good reasons why your company should explore circular approaches:
  • PROFITABILITY
It creates opportunities for new business ventures, more innovative solutions, and greater flexibility in product design and development processes within your business.

  • SUSTAINABILITY
By reusing materials and components, reducing inventory, and simplifying the value chain, you can decrease waste, resource consumption, and costs, making it a more sustainable approach.

  • IMAGE IMPACT
Taking environmental and social responsibility can have a positive impact on your company’s image. Embracing circular economy practices demonstrates your commitment to sustainability, which is increasingly valued by consumers.
